(COURT)ship for the media baron

MANAGEMENT GURU

Conrad Black, 62, is the former Chairman of Hollinger International Inc. and has been charged with fraud, racketeering, tax violations and money laundering. His trial was delayed because the defense lawyers complained about new publicity of a key witness against the ex-media baron that might have tainted the jury. The trial on 19 March, 2007 focussed on procedural matters and involved the usual debate between defense and other motion. The trial attracted worldwide media attention, but Black burst out avoiding all of them. The government expects the trial to last three to four months. But whatever be the verdict, Black’s British title is assured as it can only be stripped by the Parliament.

On Rang De Basanti, the Oscars and the BAFTA Awards

MANAGEMENT GURU

We are ecstatic that Rang De... has been nominated at the BAFTA (British Academy Of Film and Television Arts) Awards (for the ‘Film not in the English Language’ category). Personally, I’m very happy as a director with the league of films alongside which Rang De Basanti has been placed. RDB occupies the list with Mel Gibson’s Apocalypto and Pedro Almodovar’s Volver, which speaks a lot in itself. At the Oscars too, tough luck, though we’re not in the first nine (in the foreign film category), we participated and gave it our best shot and ran our race to the fullest. This is a definitive moment of joy for us, even as we await the BAFTA verdict...

Latest: The ‘Vez’ factor decrypted

MANAGEMENT GURU

Despite having legacy roots in the art of taking power forcefully (he spent 17 years with the military), Hugo Rafael Frias Chávez – elected as President of Venezuela since 1998 – is the most fanatical supporter of democratic ‘Bolivarianism’ socialism that the world has seen; while Pervez Musharraf, the dictatorial Pakistani Chief of Army Staff , took over power in a coup in October 1999, and continues to stick by the rule of the gun... his gun! And February 2007 has seen both of them attempting to increase their hold over their nations; with one attempting the same democratically, and the other ‘demenocratically’!

Blackstone bid is too high, considering the real-estate slowdown

IIPM PUBLICATION

For all those who’d presumed that real estate moguls have given up on the battling front these days, here’s a surprise! In the biggest bidding war for any real-estate property ever, Vornado Realty Trust is at loggerheads with the New York-based Blackstone Group in the race to grab the commercial real-estate giant Equity Office Properties Trust. And with Blackstone increasing its bid on February 6, 2006, to a whopping $39 billion ($55.50 per share) in cash in reply to Vornado’s $41 billion offer ($56 per share) in cash and stock, there’s every possibility that this new-age battle for property will be fought to the last cent!

Equity Office owns 543 office buildings spread over an incredible 105 million square feet. And while Blackstone may be touted as the preferred buyer due to the huge amount of $720 million pledged by Equity Office as break-up fee, the question is: Is the offer by Blackstone justified?

Even anti-love sells!

IIPM Best MBA Institute

All those who don’t believe “love is a wonderful thing,” there are savvy marketers who have designed things to help you express your feelings. So while brands like GAP, DKNY are designing t-shirts with “I love you’s” and kisses planted on them, you could visit spreadshirt.com and design your own anti-Valentine t-shirt (and you thought only Shiv-Sena was anti-Valentine). You could get one that reads, “Love is for losers,” which, incidentally, also is also their official anti-Valentine’s day motto; or you could go in for stronger messages like “Love makes me puke.” So whether there is love in your life, or lack of it, marketers have found a way to spin money out of it. If there is something for couples, then there are a whole lot of offerings for singles too. The Taj Group has a vacation scheme for singles. The TVS Scooty invites single yuppies to answer questions like, “A Scooty Pep is preferable to a date because...”

Rajesh Exports? That’s it!

IIPM PUBLICATION

Or OyzterBay! Well, not many Indians would know that this chain, which started its corporate journey in the year 2000, is owned by Rajesh Exports. How’s that for shockers? In fact, very few Indian jewelers have been able to create a branded ensemble of India’s rich legacy as successfully as OyzterBay. Cashing in on heritage, they have created a glamorous arc of product portfolio that ranges from diamonds to meenas, and at the same time, products spanning diversified cultures of India. The company today has its presence even in the North East, apart from plans to end the year 2007 with more than 50 stores across the face of India.

Despite having a mammoth focus on consolidating its retail presence, the company has still been able to maintain the boutique touch of traditional jewellers. Agrees designer Jattinn Kochhar, “The jewellery market is dominated by traditional jewellers; and whosoever has been able to create a brand image against the ‘modern jeweller’ has succeeded.” And what better than to combine this ‘traditional’ aspect with cutthroat retail warfare. So the next time somebody tells you that Rajesh Exports has won another international jewellery award, stop sniggering, for you would be amongst those few who don’t know that Rajesh Exports is the world’s largest gold jewellery manufacturer. How’s that again for shockers?!

Five-years Savings Account

IIPM Best MBA Institute

Brand: Su-Kam
Headline: Five-years Savings Account
Baseline: With Back-up from Inverter. And Pack-up for GENERATOR!
Agency: Crescent

4ps Take: At first glance, you suddenly think that this is a bank ad: that too a bank ad busy promoting a five-year savings deposit scheme or something like that! But no, that’s not what this is! Take a closer look, and you realize that this is an attempt to lure and convert the target audience into potential buyers of Su-Kam inverters. Now isn’t that a little lame? Playing along with words might be considered an art in advertising but the use of words such as Back-up and Pack-up isn’t very convincing here. To be fair, the concept of ‘promising more and delivering less’ is rightly projected in this ad, but the visual is a howler, and shows no sign of highlighting effectively how Su-Kam inverters can create a long-lasting impact in the consumer’s mind which would lead to them purchasing the product. Pack up time for Su-Kam!

Consumers hated the changed taste and it had to be replaced with the Classic Coke

IIPM PUBLICATION
The aftermath is history now – consumers hated the changed taste and it had to be replaced with the Classic Coke. So did their brand value help them in any way? Did brand loyalty come to their aid? Certainly not! Yes, there are many other examples which stand strong testimony to the fact that sheer reliance on brand value or brand loyalty has caused shareholders to lose their money! And while experts talk about strong brands, building a safety net for the companies, the truth is – the only way to build that safety net is by rolling out products and innovations at the same time, which will, in turn, also ensure that the brand remains alive! In short, keep the consumers smiling! And for this, companies cannot rely on just one single powerful brand and must learn to distribute faith on a portfolio of brands, just as Meera Mullick- Kanwar, Director, Interbrand asserts strongly, “Some brands don’t have the flexibility to maintain the relevance of a constantly evolving target market...”

IIPM Publication :- Czar turns into an oil ‘Don’

IIPM Best MBA Institute
Putin, on the other hand, wants to restore the lost Russian pride. He is well aware that Russia has the wherewithal to be at the centre stage of global political economy. And to achieve these objectives, Putin has maintained a tight grip on Russian oil oligarchs and is hell bent upon renationalising oil assets. Gazprom, the state-controlled oil major in Russia, holds 25% of the total known reserves of oil in the world, and supplies almost all the oil to Central Europe. "And Putin is not refraining from using oil price mechanism as a tool to teach Russia's 'Near Abroad' and drawing them away from the Western fold," says Dr. Nivedita Das Kundu, author of Russia and its 'Near Abroad', in an exclusive interview to B&E. Putin knows that his energy policies will attract friends and foes alike. He's ready to pamper the friends with an oil bath & treat his detractors with a strong gush of 'gas'.

A unique alarm clock demonstrates the power of a simple idea

As if we weren’t sick and tired of our Google searches already! MIT graduate Gauri Nanda’s popular invention – the Clocky alarm clock, now available for sale online (for around $50) since the second half of December 2006, promises to make search an integral part of your daily morning activities as well. Just press the snooze button of this little ‘monster’ early in the morning, and you’ll know exactly what we are talking about mean! As that’s when this clock runs away and hides, while persisting with its annoying sounds. So there’s the catch – to turn the darn thing off , you must first be able to seek it, and in the process, you end up bidding your bed Good Bye.

This technology was invented by Gauri Nanda in 2005, an invention which won her the Ig Nobel Award for Economics (as this could, at least theoretically, increase productivity of the population!) the same year. These awards honour improbable research projects that first ‘make people laugh and then make them think’. Stated Nanda on the impetus for her invention. ‘’I like my sleep... I’ve been known to hit the snooze button for two hours, or even accidentally turn off the alarm.” Now 27, Nanda has turned entrepreneur, and plans to launch more innovative products which she hopes will become an indispensable part of people’s lives.

Once the snooze alarm button is hit, the clock, which is embedded with shock absorbing materials and rubber wheels tumbles down from the table and rattles away to some isolated place, where it would ring for another 10 minutes before going off . An in-built microprocessor, which controls its speed and direction, enables Clocky to find its own routes, which means it also changes its place of hiding every day.

Clocky stands out amongst most technological inventions today in that it does not signify a fantabulous technological breakthrough, rather it represents the power of a simple, yet thoughtful idea on the part of its inventor. You could consider it like a family member, who cares if you do not make it to your appointments in time. Technology can be human too!

Now it’s Richard Brandishing low fares

IIPM Best MBA Institute
After making the world go ga-ga over his surprising, yet flamboyant moves, this time Richard Branson plans to introduce “the world’s first low-cost global network.” And he is not alone in this initiative as he intends to seek support from AirAsia’s Tony Fernandes as well as EasyJet’s Stelios Haji-Ioannou. In order to give shape to his dream of becoming the first global low-cost carrier, Branson has plans to connect the Asian sub-continent with the Western world. Hence, the destinations like Malaysia, China and India will be connected through lowbudget airlines as these regions appear promising as far as long haul air-services are concerned. The trio of Virgin Atlantic, Easyjet and AirAsia would play a significant role in reviving the global low-cost airline industry which has been affected by high fuel costs and terrorism scares.

CRM is not some fancy technology Platform

IIPM PUBLICATION

BRAND :
Shriram Commercial
HEADLINE : CRM is not some fancy technology Platform.
BASELINE : Gets you going
AGENCY : R K Swamy/BBDO

4Ps TAKE : This ad takes the story-telling route to score above others. The story is of the transformation of Madhav, from a simple truck driver to the owner of one, thanks to Shriram Transport Finance. When most banks are busy transforming their customers’ lives (of course, financially), why should Shriram, which claims to be India’s largest asset-financing NBFC, be counted out of the league? The visual of an obviously happy Madhav peeping out of a truck adds volumes to the communique. The clinching benefit to the brand is that getting a loan is just a signature away and there is a touch of relationship management involved too.

IIPM Release :- TCS bets bigon China

IIPM Best MBA Institute
Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India’s largest IT firm, after having tamed the tiger, is now heading to tame the dragon. TCS has chosen China as its next stop to strengthen its global business activities. The company aims to create a stronghold in China by tapping the burgeoning opportunities there.

A recent AT Kearney survey ranked India & China amongst the most rapidly growing markets, and thus, spreading wings into China makes strategic sense for TCS. Chandrasekaran, Executive VP, Global Delivery & Sales elucidates, “China is a $27 billion market & growing. We have ambitions to scale up the manpower to 5,000 people by 2010. China venture will serve large engagements in China.”

Entering China at this stage will help TCS to tap foreign players entering the dragon land. Given that many of TCS’ clients worldwide are entering China in a big way, Chandra says, “China venture will also serve our multinational customers in China, by offering them services specific to their local needs.”

With a CAGR of 30%, and aiming to achieve a target of $10 billion revenue by 2010, the break-neck speed at which TCS is expanding operations, comes as no surprise at
all – the latest being the $65 million IT services outsourcing deal with British supermarket chain Somerfield. And with the global leader, Microsoft, partnering with the company, the China ride for TCS seems all the more upbeat.
