A wake up call for a trigger-happy nation!

Professor Arindam Chaudhuri (Renowned Management Guru) Initiative

The first step in overcoming an addiction is to acknowledge it. Americans are addicted to violence. We profess to be appalled at every gruesome outbreak of mass murder (it’s no big deal when just three or four people are killed at a time), but there’s no evidence that we have the will to pull the guns out of circulation, or even to register the weapons and properly screen & train their owners.

On December 26, 2000, an employee of Edgewater Technology in Wakefield, Mass., showed up at work with an assault rifle & a .12-gauge shotgun. Around 11AM he began methodically killing coworkers. He didn’t stop until seven were dead. An employee who had not been at work that day told The Boston Globe, “They were some of the sweetest, smartest people I’ve ever had the chance to work with. The cream of the crop.”

Feel the anima(tion) within!

Renowned Management Guru

Feel the patriotic pulse with a Raj Kapoor flick or laugh your heart out with the classic Charlie Chaplin’s acts. Consider your muscles weaken on hearing the Fuhrèr roar out to German armed forces or get enamoured with the celebrity skirt (blowing) action once again... All this and many more; for amidst the storm created by animation, the choice may soon be yours! However, there is a special frontier yet uncharted – the line being drawn when it comes to creating forms of renowned individuals! And while many might delve over why this issue is so futuristic, experts elucidate that the lone impediment to the whole exercise of crafting real life (past) characters is that their realistic expressions will be simply based on mind’s eye – a thoroughly non-pragmatic technique which might not amuse viewers who’d associate themselves closely or possess thorough knowledge about the human subject in discussion. So while we might literally have history repeat itself, it just is getting delayed due to our attention to details; but we really can’t avoid it, eh?!

(Ger)men o’ honour

IIPM Best MBA Institute

So did the markets view his presence as the bottleneck to Siemens’ growth – as a wall, which had stood for 14 years (since he took over as CEO & President in 1992 and then moved on to become Chairman)? Justifying the stock value appreciation, Prof. R. E. Freeman, Academic Director, Business Roundtable Institute for Corporate Ethics told exclusively to B&E, “People in the market may be reading this as an initial indicator that the company is taking actions to move beyond the scandals and is serious about reform.” In his defence, the 66-year-old von Pierer – who is on the Supervisory Board of Bayer, Deutsche Bank and Volkswagen and advisor to the German Chancellor Angela Merkel – denied any part in this foul-play.

A Law & Economics graduate from Erlangen-Nuremberg University, Pierer joined Siemens in 1969 in the Finance department. The year 1977 saw him move to its power subsidiary, Kraft werk Union AG and become its President in 1989. Three years hence, he succeeded Karlheinz Kaske and became CEO, Siemens AG – a post he held till January 2005. He is married to Annette & deserves credit for initiating Siemens’ entry into emerging markets like China & India. Describing the current scenario, he stated, “Siemens had run into a difficult situation due to in-part apparent & in-part alleged misconduct of managers & employees.”

We want to revolutionize biomedical research. When different disciplines get together, you create innovation

IIPM PUBLICATION

The Barcelona Science Park and IRB Barcelona exemplify the growth in the region. The PhD program attracts international students, and scientists from different departments wander freely among the various labs, exchanging ideas, continuing research, and innovating. New buildings are under construction. Across town, at the new Institute of Photonic Sciences, projects shed light on some challenging questions in biology today. One team, led by Dima Petrov, designs optical tweezers that can hold a cell in place, suspended in liquid, and then uses the same beam or a different laser source to per form chemical analyses of the cell. The result is a brightly colored visual display of the chemistry of a cell in situ. This novel technique can be useful in studying blood cells, which are best understood in suspension; it can help reveal, for example, the mechanism and location of drugs entering those cells.

Another team is at the early stages of using light to encourage neuron regrowth. “The problem is that neurons do not regenerate,” says Pablo Loza-Alvarez, who heads the team. “If a neuron is broken, from a degenerative disease or from a spinal-cord accident, there’s no way to repair it. We’re at the very beginning of tackling this problem.”

All that glitters is not gold

IIPM Best MBA Institute

Increasing competition, increasing clutter in the advertising space and increasing pressure force the companies to do almost anything, even making false claims just to sell. The softest targets and the easiest to convince are children – they may not have the purchasing power, but their persuasion power beats it all.

Back in 1979, it sold its first product, and since then, it has never looked back. The brand has created marketing history. Almost every country today sells McDonald’s Happy Meal. It started as a ‘Star Trek Meal’ – the first-ever toy promotion of a film. Today, the popularity of the Happy Meal toys even helps one judge the success or failure of the film at the box office. McDonald’s spends two billion dollars on advertising alone – most of it targetted at children. Yet, the not so happy fact is that its products are extremely high in fat/sugar/ salt – one of the prime reasons for child obesity.

Well, that’s TCS’ growth rate for the past year; and Ramadorai takes the top credit

IIPM PUBLICATION

As if the world was not already swooning over the glittering Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), it has just added another feather in its cap. Adding to its prolific string of performances, the company outdid itself posting some sterling numbers as brought out in its recent Q4 results. Come to think of it, a whopping $4.3 billion in revenues and $969 million profits in 2006-07 bears substantial testimony that the numero uno company in the country is in very good hands – those of Subramaniam Ramadorai, CEO and MD, TCS.

Noted as the 6th most influential global IT leader (Computer Business Review, 2006), Ramadorai gives able company to the likes of Larry Ellison, Alfred Chuang and Kevin Rolls at the top of the list. Under Ramadorai, TCS has seen some landmark moments, which were critically instrumental in making the company, a global IT bigwig. But the credentials of being a leader were instilled in him from a very early age; and complemented by his exemplary educational background.

Home Depot goes green

IIPM Best MBA Institute

Home Depot, the second-largest retailer in the United States (after Wal-Mart), and the largest home improvement retailer in the US, is getting environmentally-sensitive, and will start ‘green labelling’ around 3,000 products – an initiative that will include 6,000 products in the next couple of years’ time, and which will become the largest corporate ‘go-green’ programme in the US. These brands will be called ‘Eco Options’ and will obviously include stuff that will do a world of good to the cause of climate changes and global warming. All of these will focus on issues like clean drinking water, conservation of energy, and sustainable forestry. Examples of the Eco Option brands will include fluorescent light bulbs that conserve electricity and natural insect killers. According to the company, since Home Depot is the largest buyer of construction material in the world, it has the power – and the responsibility – to convince the entire supply chain in the ‘home development’ sector (suppliers, home builders and end consumers) about the goodness of being environmentally-friendly. The chain employs more than 3,55,000 people and operates 2,164 big-box format stores in the US, Canada, Mexico and China. Clearly, this is a cause with a conscience.

Congress debacle in MCD polls brings to fore their internal differences

IIPM PUBLICATION

Everyone, including the Congress leadership, was absolute sure of the inevitable Congress defeat in the recently concluded Delhi Municipal Corporation (MCD) elections. Having administered the capital city for the last nine years – a modicum of anti-incumbency was expected to work against the Congress party. But, the party’s complete rout in the elections has surely sent shivers down the leadership spine. Worse, it has triggered a witch hunting in the party. Reveals Congress Councillor, Jitender Kochar, while speaking to B&E, "Some problem with the ticket distribution led us to defeat.” Other leaders blame it on inflation, price rise and mishandling the sealing & demolition drive in the capital.

The persisting differences between State Party President, Rambabu Sharma & Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit adversely affected the party's prospects at the hustings. And this reality will make the task of preparing for Delhi Assembly Elections, due next year, even more arduous for Sheila Dikshit.

Now, that’s something that deserves passion!

IIPM Best MBA Institute

The solution? It can only lie with boards, which must pull themselves out of bunker mode to address this problem before it’s too far gone. Even in the current environment, they have to work up the courage to create creative compensation packages that link outsize pay to outsize performance. And they must make sure those packages reach deep down into the organization, well below the top five executives who generate all the media and shareholder activist hew-and-cry.

Moreover, boards must remember that for the best and brightest, the biggest career turn-on is not just money – it’s impact. Companies need to be offering exciting, challenging jobs with real decision-making authority to both senior executives and MBAs alike. Of course, those two measures won’t halt the flow of great people away from industry, but they could slow it to a trickle. And since great people are the whole game, that’s a dam worth building.

The real estate market is not a bubble

IIPM PUBLICATION

In fact, reports suggest the Indian real estate sector to be worth around $14 billion and currently growing at 30% per annum. In a recent conference in Chennai, M. Murli, CMD, Shriram Properties Ltd., stated, “The real estate market is not a bubble and thus I don’t expect it to burst. I expect the market to grow for the next 20 years. We need to enhance transparency and build trust.” Infrastructure development is taking place at breakneck speed and there is still a huge gap to fulfil. All over India, just 8-9 SEZs are operational, while around 230 SEZs have been formally approved. According to an article by Bundeep Singh Rangar, Chairman, Indus View, in FDI magazine, the retail sector is another huge catalyst, with more than 200 malls expected to be set up by 2008, creating 20 million sq. metres of retail space in India. Further, Rangat projects demand for commercial space to approach 112 million sq. metres by 2012-13. Interestingly, even in the residential segment in urban India, the housing shortage is expected to touch 22 million units by year 2008.

Wish I could say Good Bye right now!

IIPM Best MBA Institute

So how will the DLF IPO fare in the market ultimately? While all indicators for the real estate sector in India are buoyant, one cannot really give a satisfactory answer to this question today, considering the whipping real estate stocks have taken recently. For K. P. Singh, the first imperative is to convince the SEBI to give the go ahead. And then it’s a matter of deciding what time the IPO should be launched so that it gets the desired response. For a company that is so well positioned to exploit development opportunities in a sector that’s on the verge of taking off , performance of the IPO is of critical importance. But a further delay of the IPO only means more unnecessary delays in DLF’s plans.

And what about the billion dollar question of whether the K. P. Singh’s net worth post the IPO will make him the world’s richest man? Well, with his long cherished realty ambitions at stake, chances are high that a pre-eminent position in the Forbes list won’t even be figuring among the top three concerns in K. P. Singh’s mind as on date!

The real failure is not quotas; but lack of access to primary

MANAGEMENT GURU

And the mindless and self-serving noises over quotas and reservations have started yet again. The Supreme Court has stayed the implementation of a 27% quota for OBCs in institutions of higher education. The proposed quota regime relies on data on backward castes that were generated during the 1931 Census. The Apex Court wants the government to justify the proposed quota regime with more updated data and numbers. Quite predictably, political parties are up in arms and some like the CPI(M)-fresh after the Nandigram episode-are openly criticising the Court for blocking a move that will help the ‘poor and oppressed’ classes of India. Elsewhere, intellectuals debate the pros and cons of affirmative action behind ivory towers of academia while many flog the alleged conflict between merit versus need.

There is a simple point that political parties and the assorted intellectuals who support them are completely missing out on in this stupid debate. And that is the most spectacular failure of the entire political class in independent India; their inability to provide primary education to a majority of Indians. Way back in 1947, when India became a free country, about 270 million citizens were illiterate. Sixty years down the road, more than 400 million Indians are illiterate. In 1948, when China emerged as a single modern nation, about 300 million citizens were illiterate. Sixty years down the road, hardly 60 million citizens were illiterate. For every illiterate Chinese, seven Indians are illiterate. What can be a more disgraceful failure than this?

(COURT)ship for the media baron

MANAGEMENT GURU

Conrad Black, 62, is the former Chairman of Hollinger International Inc. and has been charged with fraud, racketeering, tax violations and money laundering. His trial was delayed because the defense lawyers complained about new publicity of a key witness against the ex-media baron that might have tainted the jury. The trial on 19 March, 2007 focussed on procedural matters and involved the usual debate between defense and other motion. The trial attracted worldwide media attention, but Black burst out avoiding all of them. The government expects the trial to last three to four months. But whatever be the verdict, Black’s British title is assured as it can only be stripped by the Parliament.

On Rang De Basanti, the Oscars and the BAFTA Awards

MANAGEMENT GURU

We are ecstatic that Rang De... has been nominated at the BAFTA (British Academy Of Film and Television Arts) Awards (for the ‘Film not in the English Language’ category). Personally, I’m very happy as a director with the league of films alongside which Rang De Basanti has been placed. RDB occupies the list with Mel Gibson’s Apocalypto and Pedro Almodovar’s Volver, which speaks a lot in itself. At the Oscars too, tough luck, though we’re not in the first nine (in the foreign film category), we participated and gave it our best shot and ran our race to the fullest. This is a definitive moment of joy for us, even as we await the BAFTA verdict...

Latest: The ‘Vez’ factor decrypted

MANAGEMENT GURU

Despite having legacy roots in the art of taking power forcefully (he spent 17 years with the military), Hugo Rafael Frias Chávez – elected as President of Venezuela since 1998 – is the most fanatical supporter of democratic ‘Bolivarianism’ socialism that the world has seen; while Pervez Musharraf, the dictatorial Pakistani Chief of Army Staff , took over power in a coup in October 1999, and continues to stick by the rule of the gun... his gun! And February 2007 has seen both of them attempting to increase their hold over their nations; with one attempting the same democratically, and the other ‘demenocratically’!

Blackstone bid is too high, considering the real-estate slowdown

IIPM PUBLICATION

For all those who’d presumed that real estate moguls have given up on the battling front these days, here’s a surprise! In the biggest bidding war for any real-estate property ever, Vornado Realty Trust is at loggerheads with the New York-based Blackstone Group in the race to grab the commercial real-estate giant Equity Office Properties Trust. And with Blackstone increasing its bid on February 6, 2006, to a whopping $39 billion ($55.50 per share) in cash in reply to Vornado’s $41 billion offer ($56 per share) in cash and stock, there’s every possibility that this new-age battle for property will be fought to the last cent!

Equity Office owns 543 office buildings spread over an incredible 105 million square feet. And while Blackstone may be touted as the preferred buyer due to the huge amount of $720 million pledged by Equity Office as break-up fee, the question is: Is the offer by Blackstone justified?

Even anti-love sells!

IIPM Best MBA Institute

All those who don’t believe “love is a wonderful thing,” there are savvy marketers who have designed things to help you express your feelings. So while brands like GAP, DKNY are designing t-shirts with “I love you’s” and kisses planted on them, you could visit spreadshirt.com and design your own anti-Valentine t-shirt (and you thought only Shiv-Sena was anti-Valentine). You could get one that reads, “Love is for losers,” which, incidentally, also is also their official anti-Valentine’s day motto; or you could go in for stronger messages like “Love makes me puke.” So whether there is love in your life, or lack of it, marketers have found a way to spin money out of it. If there is something for couples, then there are a whole lot of offerings for singles too. The Taj Group has a vacation scheme for singles. The TVS Scooty invites single yuppies to answer questions like, “A Scooty Pep is preferable to a date because...”

Rajesh Exports? That’s it!

IIPM PUBLICATION

Or OyzterBay! Well, not many Indians would know that this chain, which started its corporate journey in the year 2000, is owned by Rajesh Exports. How’s that for shockers? In fact, very few Indian jewelers have been able to create a branded ensemble of India’s rich legacy as successfully as OyzterBay. Cashing in on heritage, they have created a glamorous arc of product portfolio that ranges from diamonds to meenas, and at the same time, products spanning diversified cultures of India. The company today has its presence even in the North East, apart from plans to end the year 2007 with more than 50 stores across the face of India.

Despite having a mammoth focus on consolidating its retail presence, the company has still been able to maintain the boutique touch of traditional jewellers. Agrees designer Jattinn Kochhar, “The jewellery market is dominated by traditional jewellers; and whosoever has been able to create a brand image against the ‘modern jeweller’ has succeeded.” And what better than to combine this ‘traditional’ aspect with cutthroat retail warfare. So the next time somebody tells you that Rajesh Exports has won another international jewellery award, stop sniggering, for you would be amongst those few who don’t know that Rajesh Exports is the world’s largest gold jewellery manufacturer. How’s that again for shockers?!

Five-years Savings Account

IIPM Best MBA Institute

Brand: Su-Kam
Headline: Five-years Savings Account
Baseline: With Back-up from Inverter. And Pack-up for GENERATOR!
Agency: Crescent

4ps Take: At first glance, you suddenly think that this is a bank ad: that too a bank ad busy promoting a five-year savings deposit scheme or something like that! But no, that’s not what this is! Take a closer look, and you realize that this is an attempt to lure and convert the target audience into potential buyers of Su-Kam inverters. Now isn’t that a little lame? Playing along with words might be considered an art in advertising but the use of words such as Back-up and Pack-up isn’t very convincing here. To be fair, the concept of ‘promising more and delivering less’ is rightly projected in this ad, but the visual is a howler, and shows no sign of highlighting effectively how Su-Kam inverters can create a long-lasting impact in the consumer’s mind which would lead to them purchasing the product. Pack up time for Su-Kam!

Consumers hated the changed taste and it had to be replaced with the Classic Coke

IIPM PUBLICATION
The aftermath is history now – consumers hated the changed taste and it had to be replaced with the Classic Coke. So did their brand value help them in any way? Did brand loyalty come to their aid? Certainly not! Yes, there are many other examples which stand strong testimony to the fact that sheer reliance on brand value or brand loyalty has caused shareholders to lose their money! And while experts talk about strong brands, building a safety net for the companies, the truth is – the only way to build that safety net is by rolling out products and innovations at the same time, which will, in turn, also ensure that the brand remains alive! In short, keep the consumers smiling! And for this, companies cannot rely on just one single powerful brand and must learn to distribute faith on a portfolio of brands, just as Meera Mullick- Kanwar, Director, Interbrand asserts strongly, “Some brands don’t have the flexibility to maintain the relevance of a constantly evolving target market...”
